The Outreach Department provides non-traditional library services – beyond the brick and mortar!
If you can’t come to us, let us bring our library to you! Peoria Public Library offers a special home delivery service to those who either on a permanent or temporary basis are incapable of visiting one of our five locations. We will work to find titles just for you and deliver them to your home on a monthly basis. This is a free service open only to Peoria residents. Please call us at (309) 497-2068 for more information or to apply.
Our Outreach staff bring a rotating supply of books to several area senior living facilities and nursing homes throughout Peoria. These mini collections of Large Print titles contain all genres and are available for 90 days for the residents’ use. One of our librarians also makes monthly visits (except for December) to eight memory care facilities, bringing music, crafts and books for the residents.
The Peoria Public Library’s Bookmobile brings our offerings to you – books, magazines, graphic novels, DVDs. Basically, you get a small taste of all our materials. From daycares and schools to neighborhoods, we visit them all, and you can request a visit from our Bookmobile too. Our outreach staff may even be able to come to your organization’s or nonprofit’s event.
Call us at (309) 497-2069 or email for details or to request a visit.
Check the Bookmobile calendar for locations.
** COVID UPDATE: Our Bookmobile is currently on hiatus due to the pandemic.
If you are interested in more information or signing up for one or more of our non-traditional library services, please contact the Outreach Department at (309) 497-2068.
Talking Books for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
Anyone unable to read standard print material due to a permanent or temporary visual or physical disability is eligible to receive free talking books or braille materials, including the necessary equipment (shipped for free) through this program offered by the Illinois State Library. Open to all ages. Our staff can help you with the state’s application process as well as help you choose from more than 150,000 book and magazine titles. Please call us at (309) 497-2068 for more information.
Barbers Love Books
This community partnership with several Peoria barber shops allows our staff to keep a small collection of ever-changing books at these neighborhood gathering spaces for children to read. Our program is modeled after one started in 2013 by New York public school teacher Alvin Irby who, while getting a haircut, noticed one of his students who needed practice reading was waiting for his turn. In addition to reading practice, the children often leave with a new book of their very own. To be part of our Barbers Love Books program, call (309) 497-2069.
